Nyandeni Local Municipality
Nyandeni Local Municipality is a local municipality in Eastern Cape, covering 2 474 square kilometres. It falls within the OR Tambo District Municipality. It takes in the towns and settlements of Libode and Ngqeleni.
Census 2022 counted 304 856 residents, making it the 12th most populous of the 39 municipalities in Eastern Cape and 81st of 257 nationally. That works out to 123.2 people per square kilometre. Settlement is concentrated rather than scattered. There are 60 281 households, averaging 5.1 people each. 36.7% of residents are under 15 and 6.0% are over 65. Among residents aged 20 and over, 6.2% hold a higher education qualification and 12.7% have had no schooling.
The council has 64 seats across 6 parties, with ANC holding the largest share at 51 seats (79.7%). ANC governs the municipality. Mr Banele Viwe Ndamase serves as executive mayor (ANC), and Mr GN Cekwana is acting municipal manager.
