This is not a government site

MunicipalitiesSA is an independent reference site. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any municipality, provincial government, national department, or any organ of state. We cannot log a service fault, query a municipal account, process an application, or act on a complaint against a municipality. Each municipality’s own contact details are published on its profile, and that is where those requests must go.

Accuracy of the data

Everything here is compiled from published government sources, chiefly National Treasury, Statistics South Africa, the Municipal Demarcation Board, the Auditor-General and the Electoral Commission. We reproduce those sources as faithfully as we can, but:

• Municipal data changes constantly, and office holders in particular change often.
• Official sources sometimes disagree with each other, and sometimes with a municipality’s own records.
• Financial figures are restated as audits complete, so a figure published today may be revised later.
• Where a source does not publish a figure, it appears as not available rather than being estimated.

We make no warranty that the information here is accurate, current or complete. If you are relying on a figure for anything consequential, verify it against the primary source, which is cited on every page.

The financial health grade is our own measure

The grade shown on each municipality profile is calculated by this site. It is not an official rating, it is not issued or endorsed by National Treasury, the Auditor-General, or any other body, and it carries no regulatory or legal standing.

It combines five published measures into a single score using weightings we chose, which are set out in full in the methodology so that anyone can check our reasoning or disagree with it. It measures financial management only. It does not measure service delivery, governance quality, honesty, or value for money, and a municipality may score well on the grade while performing poorly in ways the grade does not capture.

Not professional advice

Nothing on this site is financial, investment, legal, tax or professional advice. Do not use the financial health grade, or any figure here, as a basis for an investment decision, a credit assessment, a procurement decision, or any legal step. Obtain advice from a suitably qualified professional and work from audited primary sources.

Information about named individuals

Where this site names a mayor, municipal manager, councillor or official, it records that the person holds or held that office according to published sources. It is not a comment on their conduct, competence or character. Where a municipality’s figures are poor, that is a statement about the institution and not an allegation against any individual named on the page.

Political neutrality

This site reports figures and who holds office. It does not endorse or oppose any political party, coalition or candidate. Party colours are used in charts describing council composition because that is the convention used by the Electoral Commission and news organisations, and it carries no affiliation.

External links and advertising

We link to municipal websites and government documents for convenience. We do not control them and are not responsible for their content or availability. Where the site carries advertising, advertisements are served by third-party networks, and their presence is not an endorsement.
