Bojanala Platinum District Municipality is a district municipality in North West, covering 18 333 square kilometres. It coordinates 5 local municipalities: Kgetlengrivier, Madibeng, Moretele, Moses Kotane and Rustenburg. It takes in 12 recognised towns and settlements, among them Brits, Derby, Hartbeesfontein-A, Hartbeespoort, Koster, Madikwe, Marikana, Mooinooi.
Census 2022 counted 1 624 144 residents, making it the 1st most populous of the 22 municipalities in North West and 8th of 257 nationally. That works out to 88.6 people per square kilometre. Population is spread thinly across the area. There are 531 492 households, averaging 3.1 people each. 26.3% of residents are under 15 and 5.9% are over 65. Among residents aged 20 and over, 6.9% hold a higher education qualification and 5.5% have had no schooling.
The council has 28 seats across 7 parties, with ANC holding the largest share at 16 seats (57.1%). ANC governs the municipality. Ms Susan Nthangeni serves as executive mayor (ANC), and Ms Edith Tukakgomo is municipal manager.

At the last census, 41.6% of households had piped water inside the dwelling, 94.1% used electricity for lighting and 57.5% had refuse removed weekly.
