John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality is a district municipality in Northern Cape, covering 27 323 square kilometres. It coordinates 3 local municipalities: Ga-Segonyana, Gamagara and Joe Morolong. It takes in 9 recognised towns and settlements, among them Bankhara-Bodulong, Deben, Hotazel, Kathu, Kuruman, Mothibistad, Olifantshoek, Santoy.
Census 2022 counted 272 454 residents, making it the 3rd most populous of the 31 municipalities in Northern Cape and 88th of 257 nationally. That works out to 10.0 people per square kilometre. The population is very sparsely distributed across a large area. There are 66 347 households, averaging 4.1 people each. 31.4% of residents are under 15 and 5.7% are over 65. Among residents aged 20 and over, 5.5% hold a higher education qualification and 10.1% have had no schooling.
The council has 18 seats across 2 parties, with ANC holding the largest share at 14 seats (77.8%). ANC governs the municipality. Mrs Pulane Mogatle-Thoane serves as executive mayor (ANC), and Mr Kagisho Teise is municipal manager.
