Mahikeng Local Municipality is a local municipality in North West, covering 3 646 square kilometres. It falls within the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality. It takes in the towns and settlements of Mahikeng, Mmabatho and Ottoshoop.

Census 2022 counted 354 504 residents, making it the 8th most populous of the 22 municipalities in North West and 73rd of 257 nationally. That works out to 97.2 people per square kilometre. Population is spread thinly across the area. There are 104 648 households, averaging 3.4 people each. 28.9% of residents are under 15 and 5.2% are over 65. Among residents aged 20 and over, 13.6% hold a higher education qualification and 7.0% have had no schooling.

The council has 70 seats across 9 parties, with ANC holding the largest share at 39 seats (55.7%). ANC governs the municipality. Mr Tshepiso Mphehlo serves as executive mayor (ANC), and Adv Dineo Mongwaketse is municipal manager.

On this site’s financial health measure, which weighs the Auditor-General’s opinion alongside operating margin, liquidity, cash cover and irregular spending, Mafikeng scores 54.4 out of 100 for 2024/25, a grade of D, described as under strain.
