Chris Hani District Municipality is a district municipality in Eastern Cape, covering 36 406 square kilometres. It coordinates 6 local municipalities: Dr. A.B. Xuma, Emalahleni (EC), Enoch Mgijima, Vuyisile Mini, Inxuba Yethemba and Sakhisizwe. It takes in 18 recognised towns and settlements, among them Cacadu (Lady Frere), Cala, Cofimvaba, Dordrecht, Engcobo, Hofmeyr, Indwe, Khowa (Elliot).

Census 2022 counted 828 387 residents, making it the 6th most populous of the 39 municipalities in Eastern Cape and 30th of 257 nationally. That works out to 22.8 people per square kilometre. Population is spread thinly across the area. There are 226 446 households, averaging 3.7 people each. 29.9% of residents are under 15 and 9.7% are over 65. Among residents aged 20 and over, 7.5% hold a higher education qualification and 9.1% have had no schooling.

The council has 16 seats across 4 parties, with ANC holding the largest share at 12 seats (75.0%). ANC governs the municipality. Lusanda Sizani serves as executive mayor (ANC), and Mr G Mashiyi is municipal manager.
