Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality is a district municipality in North West, covering 14 671 square kilometres. It coordinates 3 local municipalities: City of Matlosana, J B Marks and Maquassi Hills. It takes in 10 recognised towns and settlements, among them Hartbeesfontein, Klerksdorp, Leeudoringstad, Makwassie, Orkney, Potchefstroom, Stilfontein, Ventersdorp.
Census 2022 counted 734 203 residents, making it the 3rd most populous of the 22 municipalities in North West and 40th of 257 nationally. That works out to 50.0 people per square kilometre. Population is spread thinly across the area. There are 220 146 households, averaging 3.3 people each. 26.8% of residents are under 15 and 6.5% are over 65. The council has 14 seats across 3 parties, with ANC holding the largest share at 9 seats (64.3%). ANC governs the municipality. Ms Nikiwe Julia Num serves as executive mayor (ANC), and Mr Mokgatlhe Ratlhogo is municipal manager.
