Greater Taung Local Municipality is a local municipality in North West, covering 5 637 square kilometres. It falls within the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality. It takes in the towns and settlements of Pudimoe, Reivilo and Taung.

Census 2022 counted 202 009 residents, making it the 12th most populous of the 22 municipalities in North West and 112th of 257 nationally. That works out to 35.8 people per square kilometre. Population is spread thinly across the area. There are 53 551 households, averaging 3.8 people each. 32.7% of residents are under 15 and 8.1% are over 65. Among residents aged 20 and over, 4.9% hold a higher education qualification and 11.2% have had no schooling.

The council has 48 seats across 9 parties, with ANC holding the largest share at 28 seats (58.3%). ANC governs the municipality. Ms Thandiwe Sebe serves as executive mayor (ANC), and Mr Andrew Makuapane is municipal manager.

On this site’s financial health measure, which weighs the Auditor-General’s opinion alongside operating margin, liquidity, cash cover and irregular spending, Greater Taung scores 36.3 out of 100 for 2023/24, a grade of E, described as distressed. Its most recent audit outcome was recorded as “financially unqualified”. In 2023/24 it reported R304.9 million in operating revenue against R362.6 million in expenditure, an operating deficit of R57.7 million. At the last census, 26.2% of households had piped water inside the dwelling, 96.8% used electricity for lighting and 22.6% had refuse removed weekly.
