uThukela District Municipality
uThukela District Municipality is a district municipality in KwaZulu-Natal, covering 11 134 square kilometres. It coordinates 3 local municipalities: Alfred Duma, Inkosi Langalibalele and Okhahlamba. It takes in the towns and settlements of Bergville, Cathkin Park, Colenso, Estcourt, Van Reenen, Weenen, Winterton and uMnambithi (Ladysmith).
Census 2022 counted 789 092 residents, making it the 6th most populous of the 54 municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal and 34th of 257 nationally. That works out to 70.9 people per square kilometre. Population is spread thinly across the area. There are 172 197 households, averaging 4.6 people each. 30.5% of residents are under 15 and 6.0% are over 65. Among residents aged 20 and over, 7.6% hold a higher education qualification and 9.9% have had no schooling.
The council has 13 seats across 4 parties, with IFP holding the largest share at 6 seats (46.2%). It is governed by a coalition: n/a. Mr Ntandoyenkosi Shabalala (Chairperson: Finance Portfolio Committee) serves as executive mayor (IFP), and Mr LS Jili is municipal manager.
